Feast of Saint Gerlando

Every year, on 25 February, the citizens of Agrigento remember San Gerlando, the patron saint of the city. The greatest value attributed to the saint is the work of re-evangelization realized through preaching and acts of charity in the Agrigento area, which, after two centuries of Arab domination, was predominantly Muslim.

His relics are kept in a silver urn in the Cathedral of Agrigento, from where, on the day of the feast, are carried in procession along the city streets, honoured by songs and prayers. The celebration of San Gerlando is renewed every 25 February to commemorate the date of his death, which took place on that very day in 1100.
